Program Description

The Medical Office Assistant (MOA) AAS program prepares students for careers in healthcare administration and clinical support. Medical Office Assistants play a vital role in physicians’ offices, hospitals, laboratories, and other healthcare facilities by managing administrative tasks and assisting with clinical procedures.

This program provides a comprehensive education in medical office operations, patient care coordination, medical billing and coding, healthcare information management, and essential clinical skills such as EKG interpretation and phlebotomy.

Through hands-on coursework and work-based learning opportunities such as internships or apprenticeships, students develop the skills necessary to maintain efficient office operations, handle medical records, and perform basic clinical functions.

Upon completion, graduates will be well-prepared to work in diverse healthcare settings and pursue National Healthcareer Association (NHA) certifications in various skills, such as Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) or Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS).

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Medical Office Assistant AAS program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate professional written and verbal communication skills in healthcare settings and apply medical terminology accurately in documentation and patient interactions.

  2. Apply medical billing and coding techniques for insurance claims and reimbursements, including mathematical and statistical calculations relevant to healthcare operations.

  3. Utilize word processing, spreadsheets, and database management tools effectively for healthcare administration.

  4. Manage patient scheduling, insurance processing, and medical office procedures efficiently while ensuring compliance with medical law, ethics, and patient confidentiality regulations.

  5. Perform basic clinical techniques, including patient preparation, EKG, and phlebotomy and assist with medical laboratory procedures in alignment with healthcare protocols.

[1] Students accepted into the apprenticeship opportunities will enroll in a combination of course, course, and course in place of course, course, course, and course. If students have completed any or all of these courses prior to participating in the apprenticeship, alternative course substitutions may be determined.

[2] CWE 31 is a two (2) credit course. Students should enroll in CWE 31 one year before graduating or when they have completed at least 30 credits towards their degree. Students should see the CWE 31 Coordinator in the Department of Business and Information Systems, during their second semester. Students who are employed full-time are not required to complete the internship portion of CWE 31, provided their employer agrees to participate in course-related surveys. Permission must be obtained from the CWE 31 Coordinator or Department Chairperson by submitting documentation of current full-time employment. College Work-Study assignments within CUNY may not be used as substitutes for the CWE internship.
