Department: Chemistry, Earth Sciences & Environmental Sciences
The Department of Chemistry, Earth Sciences, and Environmental Sciences provides courses in the forms of lectures and labs that fulfill the science requirements for CUNY’s general education mandates, and offers programs and extracurricular activities such as internships and field work that prepare students for transfer to baccalaureate and higher degree programs in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Forensic Science, Medical programs, Engineering and Earth and Environmental Science.
The specific goals of the Department of Chemistry, Earth Sciences, and Environmental Sciences
Develop transfer and career programs to respond to education and employment needs of the community that we serve.
Develop and maintain modern and competitive chemistry courses to serve the science and non-science students of the college.
Maintain a high level of instructional excellence through an experienced and dedicated technical staff.
Students in science, technology and health care fields who need to take a course in chemistry, must take either General College Chemistry I (CHM 11) or Fundamentals of General Chemistry I (CHM 17). CHM 11 is normally taken by students pursuing degrees in Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering Science etc., while CHM 17 is taken by students in Nursing, Medical Lab Technology and other Allied Health fields. Students who are enrolled in Automotive Technology are strongly advised to take CHM17 instead of CHM11 unless they plan to pursue a degree in a STEM field such as engineering at a later date.
Note: The CHM 11 course is a higher level course than CHM 17 and students who have completed CHM 11 are exempt from taking CHM 17.
