Description
A one-semester survey of the main themes and critical turns in Middle Eastern history from the late eighteenth century until2020. This encompasses Egypt, the Levant, the Arabian Peninsula, Mesopotamia, the Persian Gulf, and Iran, examining how theytransited from early into high modernity, into wider world systems, and the consequences for the region’s peoples. Each coursesub-module will be explored utilizing lectures, discussions, and dedicated written work, delivered in stages. Students willwrite on small, selected aspects of every topic and conclude the course with a more substantial research-based essay.
