Description
This course examines the art and architecture of the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America from ancient times to the modern era.Lectures cover indigenous artistic traditions, art made under colonialism, and various styles that grew out of the independence movements and political circumstances of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Painting, sculpture, architecture, as well as works that fall under the broader labels of material and visual culture, will be considered. Special attention will be given to relevant works of art in New York City institutions. A key component of the course is a formal paper based on students’ individual experiences of viewing artworks in an area museum.
