Description
This course will familiarize students with contemporary Italian culture through the lens of cinema. Students will analyze emblematic Italian films relating to the nation’s history in the 20th and 21st centuries and will discuss topics that are central to the complex notion of Italian identity, such as the influence of the Catholic Church, women’s social roles, political instability, migration, the uneasy relationship between north and south, organized crime and the mafia, and consumerism. The course will be conducted in English, and films will be available with English subtitles.
